Quantum of the Seas
In a maritime environment such as on board a cruise ship, automatic door systems must operate under extreme conditions: humidity, salt spray, temperature fluctuations, and vibrations place special demands on materials and control systems. Gilgen developed special sliding door systems with corrosion-resistant components and certified protection classes, suitable for both interior and exterior areas of the ship.
Functionality meets design – a customized highlight
One of the ship’s highlights was significantly shaped by Gilgen Door Systems. The sliding doors of the glass capsule, which hovers up to 90 meters above the water surface, were specially developed by Gilgen for the Quantum of the Seas. They allow guests to comfortably enter the observation gondola and, thanks to full glazing, provide an optimal panoramic view.
Safety zones, evacuation & fire protection at sea
A key element of the project was the protection of passengers and crew in the event of fire or emergency. Gilgen supplied fire-tested door systems certified according to international shipbuilding standards (including SOLAS and IMO guidelines). These doors enable controlled evacuation in critical situations by safely separating and guiding passenger flows.
Operational efficiency – durable systems for long-term use
With more than 4,000 people on board, reliability and ease of maintenance are essential. The installed systems feature low-noise drives, intelligent sensors, and energy-efficient control units. Thanks to Gilgen’s expertise in special solutions, the door systems were perfectly integrated into the ship’s complex infrastructure.
Conclusion
With the Quantum of the Seas project, Gilgen Door Systems demonstrates its competence as a reliable partner for highly complex international special projects. The delivered automatic door solutions meet the highest standards in terms of safety, design, durability, and efficiency – contributing to the smooth operation of one of the world’s most technologically advanced cruise ships.
